Minister's Journal 1869 - 1871 of Rev. E.R. Shapard

Note: This is a transcript of the minister's journal carried by Rev. E.R. Shapard from 1869-1871 whilst he was a circuit rider for the Methodist Episcopal Church South in Tennessee. It holds a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the parishioners at various churches, as well as, sermons preached and additional sundry notes. The actual journal was carried by Rev. Shapard in his saddle bag as he ventured from church to church. It is a black leather bound journal with a fold over cover. The interior is red with a small loop for carrying a pencil.  Entries are made partly in pencil and partly in ink. The journal measures 3 3/4" X 6". Pages edges are marbleized in red and blue waves.

[Texts:]
“Other foundation can no man lay thou that is laid.” The foundation is already laid and we do not have to lay it. Christ is the foundation and we have not the duty to lay it – Maddin

One moral evidence of the scriptures it meets the need of man – It cures the disease and heals the sores – Stowe

The church and the ministry should go into the corrupted places. They need not be contaminated by them – as Christ touched the leper and was not leprous.
